Parkrun (running in general)

I'd never been a runner, but then I started Couch to 5k, and something changed. I found it gave me time for myself. Time to think and obviously was good for me too.

I was nervous to join a running club, because I wasn't sure if it was for me. I wasn't a typical 'runner' or so I thought, so I ran on my own a lot, until I found parkrun. Parkrun is literally for everyone. It's a wonderful community, run by volunteers and happens across the world every Saturday morning. It's one of the first places I started to run regularly, but there is no condition that you have to be fast or even to be able to run. In fact, they say that, "Everyone is welcome to come along, whether you walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate."

There are loads of different parkrun courses across the country which provides many an opportunity to see different places and know what to expect. They are always 5k long, except for the Junior parkruns on Sundays, which are 2k. There is normally a lovely community feel and a coffee shop afterwards where you can get tea and cake!

Couch to 5K Runner App

This is the app I had when I started running.

I'd never used anything like it before and wasn't really sure if it was worth the time or whether I would stick at it. It costs less than a personal trainer and it means you are working completely at your own pace. I found it brilliant as it broke each session down into really small and manageable chunks, and I could see my progress so it felt like I was achieving something. Having a voice in your ear, (I used the app on my iPhone), really encouraged me and you can play your own music alongside it, to give yourself something to distract you when you're working.
