My Not So Secret Diary

Recovery Tools Reviews

Here's some of the things that have helped me in my recovery.

Yoga

Okay, this is not so much something you can buy, more something you have to do, but yoga is brilliant. It helped me fall back in to step with my body. It helped me to have faith in myself, and it's great because you need very little to do it, literally a mat. You can be social and go to a class, or stay at home and practice by yourself. Yoga outside is amazing too.

I didn't ever consider myself a flexible person, and I didn't really like going out in public in leggings, but I super love the quiet that a yoga practice provides!

Running

Another one that you can't really buy, although I do seem to have a lot of leggings and trainers now! Running has really helped me. I was never a runner. In fact, I hated running, but then I found this app and the rest is history as they say.

I've run six half marathons now, and I actually enjoy running, which is something I never thought I'd say!

I bought myself a Couch to 5k app which in itself was great - I'd never used anything like it before and wasn't really sure if it was worth the time or whether I would stick at it. It costs less than a personal trainer and it means you are working completely at your own pace. I found it brilliant as it broke each session down into really small and manageable chunks, and I could see my progress so it felt like I was achieving something. Having a voice in your ear, (I used the app on my iPhone), really encouraged me and you can play your own music alongside it, to give yourself something to distract you when you're working.

Reading

I loved reading, but when I was drinking I didn't have as much time for it as I would have liked. Having a clear head certainly makes reading more enjoyable now.

I found reading other people's experiences really helped me understand myself during recovery, as well reassure me that I wasn't alone.

There are some amazing websites out there where you can connect with other people, and I seem to have bought myself a small library too!

Tisserand Total De-Stress Pulse Point Roller Ball

These roller ball oils by Tisserand are my comfort blanket!

I have a lot of them now, but this de-stress one is my favourite. I have one in my bag at all times, and it's lovely for a little grounding when you feel stressed. They last ages too, so they are a great investment.

I'm not sure if it is just the action doing something that helps to calm me down, by rolling it on to my wrists, but they definitely work for me, and they smell great.

Warning - don't leave one in your pocket when you try to get on a plane, it causes all sorts of questions!

You can buy them easily online too.
